How to Get Your First 10 Lawn Care Customers

Let me be blunt. Getting your first 10 customers in lawn care isn’t about fancy marketing or spending dollars you don’t have. It’s about putting yourself out there and using simple tactics that work. When I started Augusta Lawn Care, we didn’t have a big budget. We leaned on cheap, effective ways to get traction. Here’s exactly what I did and what you can do.

Knock on Doors & Drop Off Door Hangers

I know—it sounds old school. But it’s super effective in neighborhoods full of homeowners. I once spent a Saturday afternoon going door-to-door with door hangers in a promising subdivision near Augusta, Georgia. I handed out about 200 door hangers. By Monday, I had 8 customers from that one day of hustling.

Don’t just drop a generic flyer—make it stand out. Include a first-time customer discount or a referral bonus. Keep the message simple: “Professional lawn care, affordable prices, free consult.” Bonus points if you add a way to contact you without requiring them to jump through hoops (text or call).

Leverage Neighbors & Friends

Your first customers are almost always people you know or people they trust. When I was starting out, I offered my neighbors a deal: I would mow their lawn once for free if they let me come back and mow it regularly at my intro rate. I got 3 customers that way, and they referred me to their neighbors.

Word of mouth is underrated, especially when you’re just starting. Ask your friends and family to talk you up. Send them door hangers to hand out, or better yet, do a free “demo” on their lawn so your work does the selling.

Facebook Groups & Local Social Media

Facebook neighborhood groups are gold. I found local buy/sell/trade groups, community groups, and even city-specific pages. Make a few posts offering your services and explaining you’re new but serious about quality work. Engage in conversations—don’t just drop an ad and ghost.

Here’s a trick: Post before/after photos of yards you’ve worked on, even if it’s your own property or a friend’s. Show that you know what you’re doing. I got about 5 customers from Facebook groups early on just by being active and answering questions on lawn care.

Offer Referral Incentives

Once you get a couple customers, hit them with a referral program. When I was scaling Augusta Lawn Care, referrals were our bread and butter. Offer them a discount or a free service for every new customer they send your way. This creates a loop that keeps paying off without you spending extra on marketing.

Example: "Refer a neighbor and get your next mow free." It’s an easy way to turn your existing clients into your sales team.

Get Local Reviews & Use Them Everywhere

Ask your new clients to leave reviews on Facebook or Google. It builds trust fast. I made sure every new customer got a quick text from me, nicely asking for a review. These reviews pulled in clients who found us through local searches and social proof.

Use Home.works Software to Stay Organized

Getting customers is just the start. When you have 10, you can’t afford to be forgetful or sloppy. I built Home.works to help lawn care business owners with scheduling, routing, and invoicing. It saved me tons of time and kept customers happy—the glue holding those first clients tight.

Real Talk: No Magic Here

Here’s the honest truth: Getting those first 10 clients takes elbow grease and time. You’ll have to knock on doors in sweat, follow up on Facebook messages, and hustle harder than you thought. But that effort pays off. When Augusta Lawn Care hit 10 customers, we had a real foundation. That number, small as it is, turned into 200+ franchise locations and millions in revenue.

Your First Step Today

Get 200 door hangers printed. Go spend one full Saturday dropping them off in a good neighborhood. Post in three local Facebook groups. Call or text your closest friends and neighbors and offer a deal. Follow up with every lead.

No budget? No problem. Work smart, be consistent, and track every lead. Get those first 10 customers and build from there.
